The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a global leader in sustainable forestry certification, partnered with Nectar Labs to develop FSC Trace - a groundbreaking blockchain-based system. This collaboration aimed to modernize and strengthen the verification of certified companies' materials tracking and trade claims across the lumber industry.

Challenge
FSC faced significant hurdles in verifying the accuracy of certified companies' materials tracking and trade claims. With FSC certificate holders representing approximately 10% of the global lumber industry, the existing system relied heavily on non-standardized, paper-based documentation. This made it extremely difficult to ensure transparency and prove legality and sustainability across diverse supply chains.
Our Solution
Nectar Labs developed FSC Trace, a first-of-its-kind blockchain system that leverages Proof-of-Authority technology to create immutable transaction records. The system tracks all FSC-certified material with an impressive 2% margin of error, providing end-to-end traceability from GIS-located forest plots to retail shelves.
The system efficiently compiles and securely stores vendor data while enabling traceability without revealing private information, striking a crucial balance between transparency and confidentiality. Its scalable architecture accommodates multiple supply chains and incorporates third-party validators, such as indigenous groups, enhancing certification credibility.

FSC Trace automatically generates compliance documentation ready for submission to EU authorities, particularly addressing the new EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This streamlined process significantly reduces the administrative burden on certificate holders while ensuring complete regulatory alignment.

FSC Trace launched in December 2024 and has begun early adopter onboarding.
Progress and Future Impact in Global Lumber Industry
The system has successfully launched its alpha release, with early adopters being onboarded and scope expanding to meet new EU regulations. FSC Trace now serves as a comprehensive platform housing all necessary information for license holders' regulatory compliance, adding substantial value to FSC certification.
